Charlie Waller Memorial Golf Day

Wednesday 26th May 2021

Two years ago we installed ‘It’s good to talk’, a bronze statue which celebrates two decades of support for the Charlie Waller Trust, and aims to raise awareness of depression. In the wake of Mental Health Awareness Week (10 – 16 May), Badgemore Park will host the 22nd Charlie Waller Charity Golf Day on Wednesday 26th.

Badgemore Park and its owners, the Connell family, have supported the Charlie Waller Memorial Trust since 1998. The Trust was founded in memory of Charlie Waller, who took his own life at just 28 years old after suffering from depression. Since his death in 1997, Charlie’s family and friends have endeavoured to further the conversation around depression by setting up the Trust. It aims to increase awareness of the illness and its dangers, to empower young people to recognise symptoms and seek treatment, and to break the stigma around mental health.

From a shortlist of three local artists, sculptor Laura Jane Wylder and her husband and business partner Sebastian were chosen for the project based on their initial sketch and its clear symbolism. The sculpture now stands proudly in situ opposite the opposite the Pro Shop.

Steve Edwards Memorial Golf Day

Friday 10th September 2021

The fifth annual Steve Edwards / Henley Rugby Club Golf Day will see golfers tee off to the sound of a klaxon at 9am!

Steve Edwards, businessman and leading light at Henley Rugby Club, died peacefully at the Sue Ryder hospice in Nettlebed on Thursday, December 15 2017, aged 63. He had been fighting stomach cancer for more than three years.

In 1989 the family arrived in Shiplake when Steve became managing director of the Reading Evening Post. He also began a 27-year involvement with Henley Rugby Club. He joined the veterans’ team, which he captained in 1990/91, and didn’t hang up his boots until he was well past his sell-by date in 1997. He then turned his active sporting focus to golf, and was a very successful fund-raiser, organising the Rugby Club’s annual golf day at Badgemore Park, arranging speakers for its various events and exhibiting his skills as an MC, speaker and auctioneer at many sporting dinners.
